Self Sufficiency

Self Sufficiency

One of the most important things for any emerging or mid career artist is to be as self sufficient as possible. If you are reading this before going to art college, it means that you need to learn about marketing, promotion, desk top publishing, graphic design, lighting, building, and carpentry.
As a working artist you could be doing anything from producing your own exhibitions to designing DVD packaging and you need to be prepared. One of the most important things you can do is become adept at the major desktop publishing and photo editing programs. Designing postcards, flyers, and posters is a lot different than any type of fine art that you may be doing. You need to be proficient at all aspects of computer aided design, and you need to think more about how your audience is going to read and interpret your message.
Two of the best resources to get started with are gimp and scribus. These two programs are freeware that is available to run on ubuntu, a linux based operating system. The cold hard truth is that once you are out of school, your access to free computers and software can be drastically reduced. Setting up a linux operating system on your computer is the only practical solution. Once you have done this you will have access to innumerable free high quality programs that will solve every problem that you can imagine.
Everything that you are able to do for yourself is one less thing that you are going to have to pay for and this can make the difference between a sustainable art career and a job at Tesco.
